A $150M gift to the university launched the Rales Fellows Program. Its objective is to provide full tuition, health insurance, and a stipend for graduate students in STEM fields from underrepresented and under-resourced backgrounds.
The main design element that carries through the pieces is a colorful tartan pattern. The founder of the university came from Scottish roots and each family has a tartan. The tartan is a pattern made up of many threads coming together to create a beautiful fabric. The fabric is made up of different colored threads—much like the students from different backgrounds and disciplines coming together at Carnegie Mellon University.
